ICC Lex Mercatoria - 2016: For the first time International Commercial Arbitration Moot V was held in 2 languages

On 25-28 November 2016 law faculty of Belarusian State University in Minsk hosted V ICC Lex Mercatoria International Commercial Arbitration Moot for students. Ukrainian Arbitration Association traditionally assisted in organization and supported the competition as its media partner. UAA members acted as the arbitrators of Lex Mercatoria, joining the representatives of the ICC International Arbitration Court (Paris) arbitrators of the International Arbitration Court at BelCC, team coaches together with the partners and lawyers of international law firms.

The educational case was based on materials of the real dispute arbitrated by the ICC International Court of Arbitration. Each team prepared a provisional memorandum for Claimant and Respondent, stating the procedural and substantive legal position in the case. Among other awards the winners obtained an opportunity to become interns at the leading law firms.

Interestingly and certainly important is that this year for the first time the competition introduced English Chapter. It was promoted by the ICC International Court of Arbitration (Paris) and the Association of International Law and Arbitration BILA (Minsk). Such innovation should expand the geography of participants and helps to equal the opportunities for international participants.

This year Ukraine was represented by a team of the Faculty of International Trade and Law at Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics, in the English Chapter as well. Ukrainian team together with representatives of the KIMEP University shared the special prize in the nomination "The best Memorandum for Respondent". We would like to thank our participants for their eager preparation and for being decent contestants! Next time we are looking forward to see more Ukrainian competitors!
