Results of the V Arbitration School

On 29 April – 3 May 2017 the offices of the leading law firms Asters and Avellum successfully hosted the V Arbitration School jointly organized by the Ukrainian Arbitration Association and the League of Students of the Ukrainian Bar Association.

Over 20 students from Ukraine participated in the intensive five-day programme. Specialized international arbitration training included lectures, interactive workshops and mock case in English. The reputed arbitration experts from Belarus, France, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Ukraine and Switzerland were among the School’s speakers.

Welcoming speech of the V Arbitration School coordinators - Olena Perepelynska (UAA President) and Iryna Pavlenko (Head of the UBA League of Students) opened the event.

The first training day launched with the lecture of Nata Ghibradze (Hogan Lovells, Munich) on the nature of arbitration agreements. It was followed by the lectures of arbitration specialists – Eva Kalnina (Levy Kaufmann-Kohler, Geneva) and Sergiy Gryshko (Redcliffe Partners, Kyiv). After lunch participants started to work on the mock case in two teams coached by Serhii Uvarov (Avellum, Kyiv) and Olexander Droug (Sayenko Kharenko, Kyiv).

The second School day was dedicated to proof and security measures in arbitration process. Artem Doudko (White&Casе, London), and Olga Hamama (Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Frankfurt) gave the lectures on these topics. At the end of the day, there was a possibility to prepare for the next mock-case hearing.

The third day began with the presentation of the barrister Rupert D’Cruz (Littleton Chambers, London) regarding the stage of hearings in arbitration proceedings and the lawyer’s role in it. Dmytro Shemelin (Asters, Kyiv) provided the next lecture. At the rest of the day students and speakers focused on the mock case and teamwork.

The fourth day speakers were Ramunas Audzevicius (Motieka&Audzevicius, Vilnius), Aliaksandr Danilevich (Danilevych & Volzhinets law office, Minsk), Ivan Kasyniuk (AGA Partners, Kyiv) and Serhii Uvarov (Avellum, Kyiv).

The final fifth day commenced with  lectures of Baptiste Rigaudeau (Foley Hoag, Paris) and Stephanie Balsys (Withers, London). Then the participants took part in the Round Table discussion on making career in arbitration feat Maria Kostytska (Winston&Strawn, Paris), Olena Perepelynska (Integrities, Kyiv), Stephanie Balsys (Withers, London), Serhii Uvarov (Avellum, Kyiv). The moderator of the Round Table was Volodymyr Yaremko (Sayenko Kharenko, Kyiv).

Annual Arbitration School is the project created at the initiative of Ukrainian Arbitration Association aimed to help young professionals interested in arbitration to gain knowledge and access to information and experience of Ukrainian and foreign international arbitration experts. This year the School organizers received the most pleasant feedback from the participants, namely students admired high professionalism of the speakers and noted how useful was to take part in a mock case.

 «Speakers of all the School days were perfect. Due to their different characters they have well complemented each other», - comments one of the participants.

«Moot court was very useful since it gave an opportunity to use obtained knowledge in practice. To simulate a real arbitral proceeding is very effective», - shares his impression one of the School’s student.

The organizers are grateful to the participants of the event, along with the law firms Asters and Avellum for hosting this year Arbitration School.
